Welcome to the Blue Prince guide series, with tips and tricks on how to navigate the mysterious mansion. In this guide, we’ll be explaining on how to solve the puzzle located in the Laboratory, which will grant us access to the Blackbridge Grotto permanent upgrade.

The Laboratory Message
Our first step is locating the message we need to decrypt. One of the periodic tables of the laboratory has no elements, but rather, a set of numbers like you see below. You’ll notice that each of the numbers is in a place where an element would be. If you need a complete periodic table to reference, you can also find that inside the room itself.

When replacing the numbers with the elements of the periodic table, you’ll obtain the following message:

Next, we’ll have to go to this machine, but if you notice, pushing the nine and three switches just gives us a red light. A note reveals that this machine will require us to route power through the Boiler Room first. And now it is mostly down to luck. It took me a few runs before I finally got a Boiler Room attached to the laboratory, so it’s quite dependant on how your luck fares.
One option would be to get the Wrench item, which once you manage to get the Boiler Room in your draft options, you have the ability to change its frequency by setting its rarity to Commonplace, a change that will persist even across rooms.
How to Generate Power on the Boiler Room
For the Boiler Room, we have to do a series of steps on its upper and lower portions. For simplicity’s sake, we’ll start with the lower portion. First, turn the valve in this tank.

Next, redirect the red-colored pipes in a way that makes a elevator-like contraption move. You’ll notice that a second tank is hidden behind that. You must now cut the steam supply but also time it so that the second tank’s valve isn’t obstructed by this contraption.

Once both tanks are activated, locate this small switch. Upon entering the room, it will be facing up. For now, we’ll want it to be facing right. Once you do that, turn the red pipe. You should notice that upon doing so, power is restored to the elevator, allowing us to go to the upper portion.

Our first order of business here is to turn this lever first, so that it can open the barred gates, and give us a nifty bridge later. This is because we’ll have to cut off power from the elevator later on, so this alternate path between the lower and upper portions is required.

Next, turn this valve from the right position to the left position. This will cause one of the doors to close, so be careful if you were planning on drafting beyond that door.

Next, you’ll take the elevator once more, and then flip this valve back to the upright position. This will shut down the elevator, but you can then use the bridge we’ve lowered previously to get to the upper portions.

Once that’s done, you can climb all the way up to the main power supply. Now, the direction of where you want power to go will be dependant on what rooms are drafted and their orientations. In my case in particular, I had to flip it to the left side, but yours might need to be on the right side. If you’re ever unsure, use R2 to open the Blueprints menu to check.

Alternatives to the Boiler Room
If you do not wish to do the Boiler Room puzzle, that’s completely fine, because there is an alternative way to do it, though this one requires you to be lucky. Scattered across the house are many Upgrade Disks, which will allow you to select an upgrade at random for specific rooms of the house.
If you manage to get the Aquarium as an upgrade option, you can get the Electric Eel Aquarium upgrade, which will function pretty much identically to the Boiler Room, but without requiring that you solve its puzzle.

Hopefully this guide has helped you figure out the laboratory in Blue Prince! We have some more guides planned, so look forward to it.
