In a surprising announcement, Square Enix has not only announced the release date of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, but also announced that a HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II is currently in development, and it is planned to be released next year.
No platforms were unveiled, it is highly likely we’ll see the games on PlayStation. If you’re wondering why they’re releasing Dragon Quest I and II, a video message from the series’ creator Yuji Horii reveals that he actually recommends that people play the third game first, and then the first and second games so you can experience Erdrick’s tale in the correct chronological order.
Dragon Quest II’s story centers on the prince of Midenhall, who is ordered to stop an evil wizard named Hargon after he destroys Moonbrooke Castle. On his adventure, he is accompanied by his two cousins, the prince of Cannock and the princess of Moonbrooke.
Meanwhile, Dragon Quest I assumes the role of a stranger who arrives at Tantegel Castle. A castle guard tells him that a dragon has captured the princess and is holding her captive in a distant cave. Determined to rescue the princess and defeat the Dragonlord, he discovers an ancient tablet hidden inside a desert cave; carved on the tablet is a message from Erdrick that outlines what the hero needs to do to follow in Erdrick’s footsteps and defeat the Dragonlord.
