Hideki Kamiya made a shocking revelation last September when he announced his departure from PlatinumGames, the company he co-founded in 2007. Now, a few months after that event, the game developer spoke out about the reason why he chose to leave.
In an interview with IGN, Kamiya said that he left his previous company because of the difference in the company’s trajectory and his belief as a game maker. He premised it by saying that his relationship with PlatinumGames was based on “trust”. However, “without that element of trust,” he said he could no longer work in the company and he chose to leave to pursue what he thinks is the “right way”.
Whereas game companies such as PlatinumGames would see video games as products, Kamiya said that he instead sees them as “art”. More specifically, he means that he wants to create a level of artistry in games that bears his signature mark—or the Hideki Kamiya style—that gamers can enjoy as they are.
In tying everything together, Hideki Kamiya left PlatinumGames to follow a path where he could freely make games that reflected his vision and artistry.
It could still take a while before the former PlatinumGames exec can return to the limelight, possibly under legal obligations with the company he left behind. Fans, meanwhile, can get up-to-date information about significant updates on Kamiya through his official YouTube channel.
