Players who are wary about jumping to Dragon’s Dogma 2 once it releases for not having played the original should not be overly concerned about the series’ back story. Game Director Hideaki Itsuno says that the game’s main protagonist starts as an amnesiac and will be kept up-to-speed in-game, so players can dive right in.
In an interview with Gamesradar+, as part of the platform’s Big in 2024 series, Itsuno revealed that certain ideas are only extracted from the original. In particular, the player’s AI companion and the game’s setting. But knowing those details from the get-go was only “useful” to the players, not a requirement to enjoying the follow-up game, he said.
With the premise that the player will kickstart Dragon’s Dogma 2 as an amnesiac, Itsuno claims that the characters around the player will eventually fill in the missing details. As such, even newcomers to the franchise will not necessarily miss anything after jumping into the game, even without any prior knowledge or experience with the seminal title.
