Clifford “Cliff” Unger, who played an important role in the original Death Stranding, is not making a comeback in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hideo Kojima confirms.
Turning to X/Twitter, the founder of Kojima Productions acknowledged the fan demand concerning Cliff Unger’s return in the sequel. But in the same tweet, Kojima boldly stated that “Mads is not appearing in Death Stranding 2: On The Beach”.
In a follow-up post, the legendary game-maker said that if they “have PLAYED DS1 to the end,” then they will understand why the figure will not be returning in the sequel.
“Cliff is a character who played a very important and special role in Death Stranding. Mads understood this and performed it beautifully. Mads’ Cliff will remain in the story of Death Stranding and in your memories forever. It is because we care about the character of Cliff that he will not appear in DS2,” he added.
Unger served as the secondary antagonist in the seminal title, played by the Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen.
In Kojima’s defense over the decision not to give Unger a returning role, one X/Twitter user stated, “Often a dead character makes more impact than a returning one”.
