In an unexpected twist, SONY has just announced that the PlayStation 3 now has a new software update. This Version 4.91 update requires a minimum of 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update), and promises an improvement to the system performance. Furthermore, this system update will also renew the Blu-ray player encryption key.
For those unaware, the PlayStation 3 was first released on November 11, 2006, as part of the trio of the seventh generation of video game consoles. The console was the first PlayStation to integrate social gaming services, including the PlayStation Network, as well as the first to be controllable from a handheld console through its remote connectivity with PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita.
Despite Sony discontinuing the production of the console in March 2016, it still received frequent software updates to improve system stability, and overall security, with an update in 2022 preventing from creating or managing PSN accounts via the PS3 console. While the ability to play PS3 games lives on the PS5 with the PS Plus Premium subscription that allows for cloud streaming, there’s still this quaint charm of playing on the original hardware.
