Sony has recently unveiled its latest financial results report for the fiscal quarter ended December 30, 2024. In this report, it was revealed that the PlayStation 5 has shipped 77.8 million units worldwide. This means that, compared to the previous report, 2.8 million units shipped during the three months ended March 31, 2025, which is 1.7 million less from the same period of the previous fiscal year.

Additionally, it is estimated that there are 124 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network as of March 31, 2025, which is up six million from the 118 million active users during the same period the previous fiscal year.
For the software segment of the report, Sony says that 76.1 million units of both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 software combined have been sold during the three months ended March 31, 2025, which is a 3.5 million increase from the 72.6 million software sold during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Out of those, 5.9 million units were first-party titles, which is down 6.4 million from the 12.3 million units sold during the same period the previous fiscal year, making it a second consecutive loss. Software digital downloads on the other hand, have increased by 3% percent from the same period the previous fiscal year. As the Nintendo Switch 2 rears its release date, one can wonder what will Sony do to combat Nintendo’s new juggernaut.
