Helldivers II seems to have a positive impact on Starship Troopers, as the success of the former sees renewed interest in the latter.
At least, that is according to Helldivers II Director Johan Pilestedt who said that the success of its launch title had an “incredible” impact on the 1997 sci-fi action film’s viewership.
In a tweet, Pilestedt showed how Starship Troopers climbed multiple ranks to reach the 45th spot from 109th among “most popular movies online,” as of February 7. Providing the data is Television Stats, is known for tracking data and sharing performance metrics for different titles based on engagement scores.
Only released back on February 8, 2024, on the PS5 and PC, Helldivers II easily rose to fame, surpassing the likes of hard hitters, such as God of War. The game, set in a futuristic world involving giant bugs, is inescapably compared to Starship Troopers due to a similar theme, alongside the display of patriotism.
Meanwhile, social media is also flooded with memes linking the two, especially on X/Twitter. One going so far as being hopeful that we would see a new Starship Trooper film on the big screen.
The hype with Helldivers II and the ability to play the game is relatively uneven due to server issues at the moment. However, it seems that players who cannot get into the game have something to satisfy their craving in the meantime.
