Rumor: Sony Developing a Portable PS5 Console, According To a Bloomberg Report

According to a recent Bloomberg report, Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently in the early stages of developing a portable console that plays PlayStation 5 games. Now, I know what you’re going to say. “But didn’t they release the PlayStation Portal already?”

Well, yes. But this mysterious console is aimed at expanding PlayStation‘s reach and competing with Nintendo for the portable gaming market. This device would also act as a counter to any potential mobile hardware from Microsoft, who also recently confirmed it is working on prototypes.

According to the people, this portable device is likely years away from launch and Sony Interactive Entertainment could still decide against releasing it. The report also goes to tell that the original idea behind the PlayStation Portal, was to function as a standalone device without the need for a PlayStation 5.

But even with its limitations, the device exceeded Sony’s sales targets, so now they seem to be conceptualizing a successor to it, one that could compete with Nintendo’s Switch successor, which is planned to be announced this fiscal year.
