Limited Run Games announced the release date for Tomba! Special Edition. The new edition of the classic platforming game comes to PlayStation 5 on August 1, 2024. A PS4 edition is coming later.
Tomba! (or Tombi! in Europe) is a classic PlayStation game by now-defunct Whoopee Camp. It featured a very unique style that mixed 2D and 3D elements in a colorful platforming.
The game follows the titular savage boy as he faces the Seven Evil Pigs. Exploring the various areas of the continent, he’ll learn new skills over time and get to complete various quests.
In a new PlayStation.Blog post, creator Tokuro Fujiwara talks about his inspirations when making the game and bringing it back now.
Back in the day, he wanted to combine the 2D charm with 3D technology. He mentions that 3D titles have a clear sense of depth, which made him wonder if he should make it full 3D instead, but designing the multiple layers made it an interesting result that could not have made otherwise.
He also comments about how the game has an open structure that allows players to tackle quests differently depending on how they go around the areas and solve quests. In the end, the team had many more sidequests than he originally envisioned.
With this new release, Fujiwara sees the opportunity to bring the title back for the old fans who still love it. He also says that he wished to make it accessible to more people in modern systems for a long while now.
