No DLC or Sequel To Baldur’s Gate 3 Are Planned, According To Larian Studios Founder at GDC

During a panel at GDC 2024, the founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, commented about Baldur’s Gate 3. According to the founder, he has no plans to release DLC expansions, DLC, or even a sequel ‘Baldur’s Gate 4’ title.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen huge commercial success, with the developer releasing several major free patches that have added several additions to the story and quality of life improvements, the founder of the studio mentioned in his speech that he would like to ‘move away’ from Dungeons & Dragons, leaving it to Wizards of the Coast, the original owners of the IP.

A transcription of his speech can be seen below, via GDC’s official TikTok post:

Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a warm spot in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue it. We’re not going to make any new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make “Baldur’s Gate 4”, which everybody is expecting us to do.

We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from [Dungeons & Dragons], we’re going to start making a new thing. […] We get bombarded with people that expects us to do these things. But that’s not for us. It’s going to be Wizards of the Coast, because it’s their IP, to find somebody they can take over the torch.

We did our job. So for us, it’s time to get a new puppy.

That’s not to say Larian is done with Baldur’s Gate 3, however, as the Studio announced earlier in February that they plan a robust and cross-platform mod support for the community.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a story-rich, party-based RPG set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons, where your choices shape a tale of fellowship and betrayal, survival and sacrifice, and the lure of absolute power.

Choose from 12 classes and 11 races from the D&D Player’s Handbook and create your own identity, or play as an Origin hero with a hand-crafted background. Or tangle with your inner corruption as the Dark Urge, a fully customisable Origin hero with its own unique mechanics and story. Whoever you choose to be, adventure, loot, battle and romance your way across the Forgotten Realms and beyond.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PlayStation 5.
