Rise of the Ronin to release March 24, 2024; pre-orders start December 14, 2023

Rise of the Ronin

Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin is set for a March 24, 2024 release as an exclusive PS5 title, with pre-orders beginning on December 14, 2023.

Making the announcement is Team Ninja’s Director and President Fumihiko Yasuda who, via PlayStation Blog, detailed a story behind the game’s development since its early announcement last year.

Described as “with a setting quintessential to Koei Tecmo” Rise of the Ronin especially highlights Team Ninja’s signature action and combat. A division of Koei Tecmo, which itself is known for the Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, and collaborations that feature the musou genre, Team Ninja is largely famed for the Ninja Gaiden series.

With exclusivity on the PlayStation 5 platform, Rise of the Ronin will have Sony Interactive Entertainment as its publisher.

Game info

Set in 19th-century Japan, it is a time marked by a period of oppression and stagnation that coincided with the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. In this game, players take control of a ronin as he entangles his destiny with some of the nation’s modern reformers, like Shoin Yoshida and Ryoma Sakamoto.

However, with the power to make decisions, it is up to the players to alter the course of ancient Japan’s history through the choices they make throughout the game. This means one thing—to pick a side and be antagonistic to the other.

Also an open-world title, players will get to explore the fields of samurai-era Japan, whether on foot, by horse, or by gliding. As a ronin, players can choose whichever weapon they choose—whether it be something far-reaching and straightforward as the spear, sharp and thorough as the sword, or ranged as a firearm or throwable weapon. Players also have a grappling hook that lets them access areas inaccessible any other way.

The standard version of Rise of the Ronin will sell for $69.99/£69.99/ €79.99/ ¥8,980 MSRP. Meanwhile, for a higher price tag of $79.99/£79.99/€89.99/¥9,980 MSRP, players can own the Digital Deluxe edition, which comes with the following add-ons:

  • Japanese Formal Wear set
  • Bando Warrior Armour set
  • Toyokuni Paired Swords
  • Iga Ninja’s Staff
