Square Enix To Record ¥22.1 Billion Loss; Plans To Better Allocate Development Resources

In a document recently sent to investors, Square Enix recently revealed that following a voting with the Board of Directors on March 2024, the company has announced that they will revise the company’s approach to the development of high-definition (HD) games.

The company will now be more selective and focused in the allocation of development resources. Because of this, the company expects to record a extraordinary loss of ¥22.1 billion (~US$140 milion, in today’s exchange), due to abandonment losses.

The latest released title by the publisher was SaGa: Emerald Beyond, the latest edition in the classic turn-based RPG series that started back in 1989. The game is standalone and can be played without having any previous knowledge of the series. It is currently available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The company also released the second game of the Final Fantasy VII remake project: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, exclusively on PlayStation 5, as well as the Rising Tide DLC for Final Fantasy XVI, both of which have received major acclaim. It is unknown how this decision will affect future or currently ongoing game development, but we’ll keep you updated.
